Gastro-esophageal Reflux
(G.E.R.)

This is when food and liquid which is in your stomach passes back up your esophagus (food pipe).  You may notice that you start coughing when you lay down or bend over.  You may find that your breathing is effected due to stomach acid causing bronchospasm (asthma) by a reflux into your esophagus, or even passing all the way to your throat causing you to cough.   

Patients may present with complaints of heartburn, chest pain or tightness, cough, "post nasal drip", sore throat, or increased asthma symptoms (especially at night) or with activity.

Management of G.E.R.

1. Diet (try to avoid)

fatty meals

bullet

large late meals

bullet

caffeine

bullet

lying down after eating

bullet

peppermint

2. Weight loss may be appropriate
3. Elevate the head of the bed 4-7 inches.  Try using blocks, magazines or phone books.
4. Antacids or other medications to neutralize stomach acid or improve the function of your esophagus.
